The history of Nigeria and the source of strenght of western Nigeria would be incomplete if Awo's name is not mentioned.Jerimiah Obafemi Awolowo was born in the old town of ikenne in 1909.He attended Baptist Boys High School and after working with TV STATION after working as a employed correspondent.Awolowo had already gathered enough money so he decided to further his education in london where he barganed full qualification as alawyer. POLITICAL BEGININGS
In 1947, awo returned to nigeria.,with his exposure as someone who once lived in England,he saw the ills of the Nigerian society and he decided to go into politics.His political activity begun when the campaign of Nigeria's self independence started.In 1948, was made the head of action group which major ideaology was for the suppot of Nigeria to be a socialist state and also to favour their own region.Awolowo was also knowed for his love for education .He brought about western education and Heaith facilities for the westerners.He became massive and well known for his good work.He also campaigned for good infrastructural development in Nigeria. POLITICAL CRISES In 1962, there was a massive political crises in AG and was due to the clash of personality between obafemi and SL.Akintola,his deputy.Obafemi saw Akintola as an overambitious and overzealous man who want to betray the party.This dispute with akintola made awolowo to remove him as the deputy party leader.His introduction of democratic capitalism which was totally diffrent from the party's belief hightened the crises. However,the most conflicting issue that shred the party was the question whether the party to support the NNDP at the federal level but Akintola was against the motion.The party was divided into two; Awolowo headed the group eith some supporters while Akintola headed a quiet number of people who firmly supported him.The allegation that made chhief awolowo,who was the leader of the opposition of the federal house of representatives to be consulted as the party leader before any important policy decision were made to be taken by the western regional goverment.Meanwhile,a annual congress was held in jos in febuary 1962,a decision was reached to abolish the deputy leader post which Akintola was removed from with acharge of maladminisration and disloyalty.A letter of dismissal was sent to the governor by the majority leader of the house and akintola was officially removed and DS Adegbenro was to take over .At the end of the meeting , a crises erupted in the house immediately . As a result of this great disorder , crises erupted in lagos and the legislative chamber was locked down . The federal goverment decided to invoke a state of emergency and MA.Majekodunmi was appointed as the minister of health.Meanwhile ,chief obafemi and thirty others wee chargeed with planning to overthrow the government and at the end of the trial, in 1962, they were sentenced to ten years in prison. At the end of the crises,SL.Akintola and his supporters formed the UNITED PROGRESSIVE PARTY with some members of NCNC which later came together to form NNDP. AFTER he was released from prison , the NPC was already powerful and well supported by the north.They remained a major factor in the federal governent and even the NNDP were overthrowned from goverment by NYM political party.Even after the demiss of Awolowo , western education was made free under his governance and the west are well knowned to be the most educated onlike the other ethnic groups.
